Key Features

Built-In Standoff The 1 inch standoff lifts the post off the concrete, which helps reduce moisture contact at the post end. That matters for deck posts, basement posts, and other structural posts exposed to splash or damp conditions. Easier Post Alignment The slotted anchor hole gives you adjustment around the anchor bolt, so you can fine-tune post placement instead of fighting a fixed hole. That saves time when layout is close but not perfect. ABA66Z for 6×6 Posts This retrofit post base is sized for nominal 6×6 posts and made from 14 gauge steel with a ZMAX finish. It is a practical choice for deck footings and other top-supported wood-to-concrete connections.

Overview

The Simpson Strong-Tie ABA66Z Adjustable Standoff Post Base is a retrofit post base for attaching a nominal 6×6 wood post to existing concrete. This is a post base designed for post-to-footing connections in decks and other top-supported structures. Model Number ABA66Z. If you are setting structural posts on cured concrete and want a cleaner, more forgiving installation than a fixed base, this is the hardware built for that job.

What makes the ABA66Z useful on the job is the slotted anchor hole in the base. Instead of having one locked-in anchor position, you get some adjustment around the anchor bolt, which makes precise post placement easier. That helps when you are lining up deck framing, patio cover posts, or other supports and need to correct small layout differences without reworking the footing.

The built-in 1 inch standoff is not just a nice detail. It helps meet code requirements for structural posts installed in basements or in areas exposed to weather or water splash, and it helps keep the end of the post off the concrete where moisture tends to sit. For exterior wood construction, that added separation is one of the features that actually matters long term.

On the strength side, the ABA66Z is made from 14 gauge steel with a ZMAX galvanized finish for extra corrosion resistance in exterior and treated-wood applications. Simpson rates this model for increased uplift loads for earthquake or wind loading, with allowable loads listed at 920 for uplift and 11,415 for download in the provided load table for Douglas Fir/Southern Pine conditions. It uses a 5/8 inch anchor diameter and fastens to the post with either (8) 0.162 x 3-1/2 inch nails or approved Strong-Drive SD connector screws.

In practical terms, this Simpson Strong-Tie post base is a strong fit for deck builders, remodelers, and contractors working on wood framing over existing concrete. It is best for decks, patio covers, and similar top-supported structures where you need a wood-to-concrete retrofit connection with some adjustability. It is not recommended for non-top-supported installations such as fences or unbraced carports, because post bases like this do not provide enough resistance to prevent the member from rotating about the base.

Dial In Post Placement on Existing Concrete

This is where the ABA style base earns its keep. When you are retrofitting to cured concrete, the slotted anchor hole gives you room to adjust the post location instead of being stuck with one exact anchor position.

• Slotted base helps fine-tune alignment around the anchor bolt

Keep the Post Off the Concrete

The 1 inch standoff is one of the most important parts of this connector. It helps reduce moisture exposure at the bottom of the post and supports code-driven post separation from the concrete surface.

• 1 inch standoff for structural posts in damp or exposed locations
• Good fit for decks and other top-supported exterior structures

Pro Tip

When you set your anchor, keep it extending less than 1 inch above the concrete. If it sticks up too far, it can interfere with the ABA66Z standoff and make the post base harder to seat correctly.
