Key Features

Built for Triple 2x This Simpson Strong-Tie post cap is sized for a triple 2x beam on a 6x post, so you get a proper beam-to-post connection without field guessing or improvised blocking. Double-Shear Strength Double-shear nailing helps transfer load more effectively than basic angled nailing or screw fastening. That means a stronger, more secure wood-to-wood connection at the top of the post. ZMAX for Exterior Use The ZMAX coating adds corrosion resistance for exterior work and treated lumber applications, which matters when the connector is living outdoors year-round.

Overview

The Simpson Strong-Tie BCS2-3/6Z BCS ZMAX Galvanized Post Cap is a one-piece wood connector made to tie a triple 2x beam to a 6x post. This is a post cap designed for fastening a wood beam to a wood post. Model Number: BCS2-3/6Z. If you are building a deck, patio cover, or other top-supported wood structure and want a cleaner, stronger alternative to improvised toe-nailing, this is the right kind of connector for the job.

What makes the BCS series matter is how it handles the connection. Simpson Strong-Tie built this cap with opposing flanges for increased lateral resistance and double-shear nailing for added strength. In plain terms, that gives the beam and post a more positive mechanical connection than just driving nails or screws at an angle. It also helps reduce the chance of splitting the post and avoids relying on end-grain nailing.

This BCS2-3/6Z version is specifically sized for a triple 2x beam and 6x post, which is the kind of fit you want when you are trying to keep framing straightforward and code-minded. The connector is made from 18-gauge steel and uses a one-piece formed design, so there is no assembly or bracket pairing to figure out on site. The geometry is already set up for the beam and post size it is meant to carry.

For exterior framing, the finish matters. This model uses ZMAX coating, which Simpson Strong-Tie uses for extra corrosion resistance in outdoor environments and treated-wood applications. That makes it a better choice for exposed deck framing, patio covers, pergola-style top-supported structures, and similar work where standard interior hardware would not hold up the same way.

Installation is also practical. Simpson notes that the design is intended to be installed with all specified fasteners, and Lowe’s lists this model for installation with 16d common nails. The connector is also designed so you are not nailing into end grain the way a field-built connection often does. That is a real benefit when you want a repeatable connection detail across multiple posts.

As for use case, this is best for contractors, deck builders, remodelers, and serious DIYers who are building top-supported wood structures and need a dedicated beam-to-post connector. It is not the right pick for non top-supported installations such as fences or unbraced carports. If your project calls for a triple 2x beam sitting on a 6x post and you want a connector that improves uplift and lateral support while keeping the install straightforward, this Simpson Strong-Tie post cap is a solid, purpose-built choice.

Designed for Real Beam-to-Post Work

This connector is purpose-sized for one specific job: tying a triple 2x beam to a 6x post. That saves time on layout and helps avoid loose-fit hardware that creates slop in the connection.

• Nominal size: triple 2x beam to 6x post
• One-piece post cap design for wood-to-wood fastening

Made to Add Lateral and Uplift Support

The BCS series is built to provide both uplift and lateral support at the top of the post. That matters on decks and similar structures where the connection needs to do more than just hold parts in place.

• Opposing flanges are designed to improve lateral resistance
• Double-shear nailing is used for optimal strength

Dimensions You Can Build Around

When you are planning post spacing, beam buildup, and connector fit, dimensions matter. Simpson publishes the connector geometry so you can match the cap to the lumber package instead of hoping it works once the beam is already assembled.

• W1: 4-5/8 in. and W2: 5-9/16 in.
• L1: 4-3/8 in., L2: 2-7/8 in., H1: 3-5/16 in., H2: 2-15/16 in.

Pro Tip

Use this connector only where the structure is top-supported, and do not treat it like a catch-all bracket for fences or unbraced carports. On this kind of hardware, using the exact fastener schedule is what gets you the performance you are paying for.

Tool Nut’s Take

Simpson Strong-Tie BCS2-3/6Z BCS ZMAX Galvanized Post Cap Gets the Connection Right

If you are setting a triple 2x beam on a 6x post, this is the kind of connector that keeps the detail clean, strong, and repeatable.

• Who it’s for: Deck builders, framers, remodelers, and homeowners building top-supported outdoor wood structures.
• Why it stands out: It is sized for a real framing condition, uses double-shear nailing, and adds lateral and uplift support instead of just covering the joint.
• Worth knowing: This is not a universal bracket. It is meant for a triple 2x beam and 6x post, and it is not recommended for non top-supported installations.
