Overview

The Simpson Strong-Tie LU28 face-mount joist hanger is a light face-mount connector for joist-to-header installation in wood-framed construction. This is a joist hanger designed for fastening nominal 2×8 and 2×10 wood members to a wood header. Model Number: LU28. If you are framing decks, floor systems, or other wood structures where a clean, rated connection matters, this hanger is built to do that job without a lot of extra fuss.

What makes the LU28 practical on the job is that it is not just a bent piece of steel. Simpson Strong-Tie built the LU series with tested allowable loads and multiple approved fastener options, so you can match the connection to the job requirements. For the LU28, the published load table shows installation with Strong-Drive SD connector screws or the specified nails, which gives builders flexibility depending on workflow, tool setup, and inspection requirements.

The design is straightforward in a good way. The 1-9/16 inch seat width fits the intended joist size, and the 6-3/8 inch height gives enough side engagement for the connection without stepping up to a heavier hanger than the job needs. Precision forming helps the hanger sit where it should, and the built-in speed prongs temporarily position the connector before full fastening. On repetitive framing, that small detail makes a real difference because it keeps layout moving instead of forcing you to hold the hanger with one hand and fasten with the other.

Material and finish matter with hardware like this. The LU28 uses 20-gauge steel with a zinc galvanized G90 coating. That gives the connector the rated structural form plus added corrosion resistance for common wood construction applications. It is intended for wood-to-wood connections and is listed for engineered wood applications as well, so it fits a wide range of standard residential framing conditions.

Installation details are where a lot of hangers either earn their keep or create headaches. Simpson notes that the LU series is tested and code compliant when installed with the specified fasteners. For the LU28, published guidance calls for either approved nails or Simpson Strong-Drive SD #9 x 1-1/2 inch connector screws. The key point is simple: use the full fastener schedule if you want the published allowable loads. That is what separates a real structural connection from something that only looks finished.

This hanger is best suited for carpenters, deck builders, remodelers, and general contractors working on wood framing where 2×8 or 2×10 joists need a face-mount connection. It also makes sense for serious DIY users building to code and wanting the same hardware pros use. If your job calls for a clean, economical hanger with tested performance and easier positioning during install, the LU28 is a solid pick.
