Key Features

Adjustable Placement The slotted base gives you flexibility around the anchor bolt, so lining up an 8×8 post is easier when the bolt is not dead center. 1 Inch Stand-Off The built-in stand-off keeps the post raised off the concrete to help manage moisture exposure and meet code requirements for structural posts in wet or splash-prone areas. High-Capacity ABU Base This Simpson Strong-Tie adjustable post base is built for serious post-to-concrete connections, with higher uplift performance for wind and earthquake loading in top-supported structures.

Overview

The Simpson Strong-Tie ABU88Z adjustable post base is a retrofit post base for connecting a nominal 8×8 wood post to existing concrete. This is a post base designed for attaching wood posts to existing concrete footings in top-supported structures. Model Number: ABU88Z. If you are building a deck, patio cover, or similar structure and need a clean way to anchor a large post while keeping it off the slab, this is the right kind of hardware.

What makes the ABU88Z matter is adjustability where it actually helps. The slotted anchor hole in the base gives you room to work around the anchor bolt during layout and installation. On paper that sounds small. On the job, it means less fighting misalignment when you’re setting a full-size 8×8 post over existing concrete. That can save real time when anchor placement is close but not perfect.

The built-in 1 inch stand-off is another feature that does actual work instead of just sounding good in a catalog. By holding the post up off the concrete, the base helps reduce direct moisture exposure at the end grain. Simpson Strong-Tie also notes that this stand-off design meets code requirements for structural posts installed in basements or locations exposed to weather or water splash. For exterior post framing, that gap matters.

For capacity, the ABU88Z is intended for high-load applications. Simpson Strong-Tie lists increased uplift loads for earthquake or wind loading, and the load table shows allowable uplift of 4,120 lb with an allowable download of 22,405 lb for the ABU88Z configuration. That makes it a serious connector for larger structural posts where load path and hold-down performance are part of the conversation, not an afterthought.

Construction is ZMAX coated steel, which is aimed at exterior use and treated-wood applications where better corrosion resistance is needed than standard galvanized finishes. The ABU88Z uses a base gauge of 14 and strap gauge of 12, sized specifically for a nominal 8×8 post. Published dimensions for this model are 7-1/2 inches wide, 7 inches long, and 7 inches high. Packaging quantity is one base.

Installation details are straightforward but important. Simpson Strong-Tie specifies that all required fasteners must be used. For the ABU88Z, the load table lists (18) 0.162 x 3-1/2 inch nails for fastening the post, and the installation notes also state that Strong-Drive SD Connector screws or bolts may be used as optional fastening methods on the ABU88Z. At the concrete side, the load table shows (2) 5/8 inch anchor diameters. Simpson Strong-Tie also notes that base anchors must extend less than 1 inch from the concrete to avoid interference with the stand-off.

This adjustable post base is made for post-to-footing work on decks and similar top-supported structures. It is not recommended for installations where the post is not top supported, such as fences or unbraced carports, because post bases do not provide enough resistance to keep members from rotating about the base. That limitation is worth knowing up front, especially if you are choosing hardware for freestanding or laterally unsupported posts.

Who should buy it? Contractors and serious DIY builders working with large 8×8 posts on decks, patio covers, and structural exterior framing. If you need a wood-to-concrete retrofit base with stand-off protection, layout forgiveness around the anchor bolt, and real uplift capacity, the Simpson Strong-Tie ABU88Z adjustable post base is a practical choice.
