Solid 4x Connection This post cap is built to connect a nominal 4x post to a wood supporting member. It gives you a more secure connection than angled nailing or basic screw fastening. 18-Gauge Steel Body The 18-gauge steel construction gives this Simpson Strong-Tie post cap the rigidity needed for light cap or base applications without overcomplicating the install. ZMAX Exterior Finish ZMAX galvanization adds corrosion resistance for exterior builds and treated lumber, which matters when the hardware is going to live outside year-round.

Overview

The Simpson Strong-Tie ZMAX Galvanized Post Cap for 4x (BC4Z-R) is a wood-to-wood post cap designed to connect a nominal 4x post to a wood supporting member in deck and patio cover framing. This is a post cap designed for securing top-supported wood posts in light cap or base applications. Model Number: BC4Z-R.

What makes this hardware worth using is simple: it gives you a positive mechanical connection where a lot of builders used to rely on angled nails or a few structural screws. That matters because it helps reduce the chance of the post splitting and avoids nailing into end grain, which is never the strongest way to hold framing together. If you are building a deck support detail or reinforcing a wood-to-wood post connection, this bracket is doing a very specific job, and it does it better than improvised fastening.

The BC series is a dual-purpose post cap and base style connector for light applications, but this specific BC4Z-R is called out for top-supported installations. In real terms, that means it is intended for situations where the structure above provides the proper support path, like deck framing or similar wood construction. Simpson Strong-Tie also specifically notes that it is not recommended for non top-supported installations such as fences or unbraced carports, which is an important limitation to understand before ordering.

Material and finish matter on connectors, and this one is made from 18-gauge steel with a ZMAX galvanized finish. That combination gives you a practical balance of strength and corrosion resistance for exterior use and treated wood applications. If the connector is going outside, or it is touching modern pressure-treated lumber, the extra corrosion resistance is not a nice extra. It is the baseline requirement if you want the hardware to hold up.

Installation is straightforward. Supplementary product data indicates this post cap is installed with 16d common nails or #10 x 1-1/2 in Strong-Drive SD screws. That gives you some flexibility depending on how you like to build and what fastening method fits the job. The main point is speed and repeatability. Layout your post, seat the connector, and fasten through the preformed holes rather than fighting an awkward end-grain nailing pattern.

In terms of size, this bracket is made for a nominal 4x member, with actual product dimensions listed at about 3.659 in x 3.659 in x 5.92 in. The compact footprint makes it easy to work into deck and patio framing details without a lot of extra bulk. This is not decorative hardware. It is functional framing hardware built for load path continuity and cleaner connection details.

The ideal buyer for the Simpson Strong-Tie ZMAX Galvanized Post Cap for 4x (BC4Z-R) is a deck builder, remodeler, carpenter, or serious DIYer who wants a cleaner and stronger wood post connection than field-made fastening can provide. If you are building an exterior wood structure and want hardware that is purpose-built for the connection instead of guessed at on site, this is the right kind of part to have in the pile.

Built for Cleaner Wood Post Connections

This connector is made for the kind of framing detail that needs to be secure, repeatable, and easier to inspect than a handful of site-driven fasteners. On a deck or patio cover, that means a more intentional connection from post to wood support.

• Provides a positive connection for a post to a wood deck
• Designed for top-supported installations, not fences or unbraced carports

Exterior Finish That Makes Sense

Exterior connectors live in a rough environment, especially around treated lumber. The ZMAX finish is here for a reason: it helps this post cap handle outdoor exposure better than basic unfinished hardware.

• Made from 18-gauge steel for light cap or base applications
• ZMAX galvanization is intended for exterior and treated-wood use

Double-check whether your post is nominal 4x lumber before you order connectors. With framing hardware, matching the connector to the actual lumber standard on the job saves a lot of aggravation and keeps the fit tight.
